Lately, people tell us dealers are urging them to choose higher deductibles on their car insurance. At first glance, it could be good if you can afford it when you need it. However, dealers don’t always explain that if something happens, it’s what you pay, your “out of pocket,” in the event of a wreck, even if you didn’t cause it. For example, when someone hits you, sends you into a guardrail, then takes off, YOU PAY your deductible then your car insurance kicks in.
3 Things about Higher Deductibles
Here are three things to know about deductibles when deciding what auto insurance policy to buy. Remember, deductibles apply to Collision and Comprehensive coverage options.
- A deductible is the amount you pay before the insurance company will pay to repair your vehicle. If repairs cost less than the deductible, there’s no reason to even make the claim.
- Higher deductibles can mean a lower cost for the policy, yet, it’s not always a lot of savings. Make an informed decision, find out what other deductibles cost.
- Higher deductibles also mean you pay more out-of-pocket if you have a claim. Can you pay your deductible amount when you need it? It likely won’t be at a convenient time.
Higher Deductibles, Worth It?
Sometimes a higher deductible saves a significant amount but not always. An accident can eat up the savings quickly. Before you decide, check the difference in premium before you assume that you need or want the higher deductible. With this in mind, be a wise car insurance consumer.
