What car insurance coverage do you need to be legal?
Let’s say, you just want to be legal when driving in your state. Ask for Liability or “Liability only.”
As a general rule, Liability coverage gets you legal. Liability includes Bodily Injury (damage to people) and Property Damage (damage to things). Liability covers the damage you caused or for which you are responsible.
Many states also require Uninsured Motorist. This kicks in, up to your limits, if you’re injured by an uninsured, negligent driver (proven it’s their fault). If a state requires the Uninsured Motorist, it is still commonly called “Liability Only.” As a side note, we recommend this coverage even if your state does not require it. It’s for you and the people in your car.
Car insurance requirements vary by state. Some states, like Kansas, Oregon, or Virginia require additional coverages too. See our state pages for more details. For instance, if you live in Kansas City, KS or Kansas City, MO, your requirements are different. Shared borders often don’t mean shared insurance requirements.
Pro Tip:
List all drivers you want covered to drive your car. Often, they cost little to nothing when they’re the same age or older and have a good driving record. Important! You, as the car owner, can be held responsible for their damages since you let them drive. Avoid hassle and potential legal issues. Stay legal when out on the road.
