Oh no, your car got egged! Though the American Egg Board called them the “incredible edible eggs,“ when people do not use them for food, they are scary things (scary to paint that is)!  Harmless Halloween prank? Hardly.  Eggs and paint do not mix well. The eggs will win unless you act immediately. So if an egg ever makes contact with your vehicle, it’s no joke! Do not delay. Wash it off at once (before it dries) or you could be talking big bucks for a paint job.

• The shells – when someone throws an egg, the shells shatter and scratch the clear coat of your paint.
• The whites – egg whites protect the acidic yolk and even make waterproof glue.
• The yolks – yolks are acidic; they actually eat through paint and cause staining.  The longer they sit the more time for them to wear through the paint.

If Your Car Gets Egged

When your car gets egged, there are many articles online with great tips for washing off eggs. If you do an internet search…check out the pictures of damage while you’re at it.  A couple key points are to hop to it quickly pulling off as many of the shell pieces as possible then do a quick rinse with water, before drying occurs. Next, gently wash it right away. If the eggshells cause no damage and you get to the egg in time, the wash with mild detergent could do the trick.  To be sure, or if they’ve dried, getting your vehicle to a professional detail service as close to immediately as possible is not a bad idea either since they’ve seen it before and know what to do. 

The hard thing about eggings is, they often happen at night when you’re asleep. This gives the egg time to dry, glue onto, and start doing its enzymatic thing to your paint.  (Side note, this applies to other painted surfaces, like mailboxes & homes, too.)   So if your vehicle’s paint is damaged, you now must consider what to do about it. 

Eggs and car insurance

You can call your auto insurance company to report the damage but unless you have Comprehensive coverage it won’t matter.  If you have Comprehensive, it’s always good to know your deductibles and figure out the scope of the problem before you call.  Snap a quick picture to have in case you need it.  If you’re driving around with a high deductible, you’re often better off handling it yourself, out of pocket.  That’s why the companies offer lower premiums for higher deductibles (because the insured accepts financial responsibility for more of the risk). 

Now to decide, your best way to proceed with or without using your car insurance. If you only have liability coverage, there’s no claim to be made. But if you have physical damage as Comprehensive, you may want to make a claim. It all depends on your coverage, your deductible, and the amount of damage. If you have a $500 deductible but the damage is $600, it’s not worth the claim on your record. Whatever you determine, however, just get those eggs off your car right away!
