CANCELLATION OR NON-RENEWAL?
In car insurance, cancellations and non-renewals both end coverage. However, they’re not the same thing.
In most cases, a cancellation happens during the policy term. By contrast, a non-renewal happens at the end.
This quick guide explains the difference, common reasons for each, and smart ways to avoid both problems. First, let’s look at cancellations.
Cancellations
First, a look at cancellations. A cancellation ends your coverage before the policy term ends. During the first 60 days, many insurance companies can cancel more easily. After 60 days, policy rules apply. Most cancellations happen because of the policyholder’s actions. Sometimes, the company may allow the insured to reinstate the policy later.
PRO TIP: The cancel date is the date there is NO INSURANCE. Always pay before, in the case of cancellation for non-payment.
What are common causes for cancellations?
If you get a cancel notice, don’t panic. There are some reasons for it, and it could be a good reminder. For example, these are common reasons insurance companies cancel auto insurance:
- Nonpayment: If you miss the payment deadline, your policy can lapse on the cancel date.
- To avoid this, pay on time. You can also use automatic payments or pay in full.
- Suspended or revoked license: If you cannot legally drive, the insurer may cancel your policy.
- To lower this risk, drive carefully and avoid tickets. In some cases, traffic school completion may help.
- Misrepresentation or fraud: False or missing details on your application can lead to cancellation.
- To prevent this, tell the truth.
To recap, make your payments on time (or before the cancel date), keep your driver’s license status valid, and answer application questions honestly. Also, update your agent or company as your situation changes.
As a side not, know that repeated cancellations can make insurance tougher to find or raise your future rates.
Non-Renewals
Now, a look at non-renewals in car insurance. A non-renewal ends coverage when the current policy term ends. Sometimes the insurer chooses not to renew (or continue) the policy for another term. Another instance is if the policyholder does not pay the renewal bill. In either case, the full term has already completed and ended.
For instance, your policy may end if you miss the renewal payment. If you use autopay, renewals can happen automatically.
When an insurer issues a non-renewal, it gives advance notice. State laws set the notification rules. For instance, the Indiana Department of Insurance website states: “At the end of the policy period, the company may refuse to renew your policy, but they must give you 20 days advance notice.”
Common reasons for auto insurance non-renewal
- Too many accidents, claims, or moving violations.
- Moving to another state.
- The insurer stops offering that coverage or program.
- The policyholder does not provide requested information.
- The application includes false information.
- The driver’s license becomes suspended or revoked.
- A driver gets a DWI or DUI.
- The insurance company leaves the market or state.
- An insured’s health change affects their ability to drive safely.
- A new vehicle falls outside the company’s guidelines.
Realize, one non-renewal does not end your options. An independent agent can compare other carriers for you. It’s always best to address the issue before it actually happens, as in, before the non-renewal date.
Summary
In short, both cancellations and non-renewals end coverage, but they happen for varied reasons. If you get either notice, contact your agent right away. In many cases, quick action on your part can prevent a lapse in your car insurance (which can save you money).
