Ohio SR22, the BMV and Driver License Suspensions
BY SOLO INSURANCE®
Let’s face it—dealing with a suspended license in Ohio can feel confusing and overwhelming. If you’ve recently had your driver’s license suspended in Ohio, you might have heard the term SR22 (or SR-22 insurance) tossed around. Though it sounds like a type of insurance policy, it’s not. It is, however, a very important piece of the puzzle if you’re working to get back on the road legally.
In this post, we’ll break down what you need to know about Ohio SR22 and car insurance. Also, how it relates to your driver’s license suspension and reinstatement.
What is an SR22 [SR-22]?
First things first—an SR22 is a filing or certificate filed by a car insurance company. States call it a certificate of financial responsibility. Actually, it’s not insurance but proof of insurance. The car insurance company files this certificate with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to state that you’ve obtained Ohio’s minimum required liability coverage. The agent you choose should help you through the process.
Please note, an SR-22 certificate does not grant driving privilege or reinstate your driver’s license by itself. The BMV provides a list of their requirements to reinstate a driver’s license. Here is a link to Ohio BMV Suspensions & Reinstatements page. Above all remember, the SR22 is valid only when you keep the policy or bond active.

Why would an SR22 [SR-22] be needed in Ohio?
Remember as a kid, when an adult said to you, “Because I said so, that’s why!”? Well, the state is similar, except that here a driver hasn’t followed the rules of the road. Their license is in “time out” suspension. Typically, SR22 Certificates are required after certain violations and/or combinations of violations and accidents, such as:
- DUI or OVI convictions
- Driving without insurance
- Reckless driving
- Accident without vehicle insurance
- License suspension or revocation
- Leaving the scene of an accident
An SR-22 could also be required if multiple traffic violations occur within a short period of time. A person’s past driving record can play a part also.
How long is an SR22 required in Ohio?
The Ohio BMV requires a person carry an SR22 filing for a specified amount of time—often 2 to 5 years. The time period depends on the severity of the offense(s) and driver history. During the required time, one must maintain continuous auto insurance coverage without any lapses to keep the certificate active.
If Ohio requires an SR22 and you fail to keep it active, there are consequences. They include immediate re-suspension, restarting the SR22 filing period and/or higher fines and penalties.
Can I drive on my SR-22 in Ohio?
People sometimes think the SR22 allows them to drive. They think incorrectly. Remember, it is only one piece of the puzzle to get a driver’s license reinstated. The SR22 is filed and then processed by BMV. They update your status, then you must fulfill any other BMV requirements. Requirements vary by offense and driving record. On its own, an SR22 does not grant reinstatement. The reinstatement process includes an SR22.
After a suspension, the reinstatement process includes such things as:
- Serving the suspension period (this can range from 90 days to several years).
- Filing proof of insurance (via the SR22 certificate).
- Paying reinstatement fees (per BMV guidelines, varies based on offense and number of prior suspensions).
- Complying with court and/or BMV requirements (such as attending remedial driving courses, substance treatment, or interlock devices).

The key is to stay informed, follow the rules, and maintain your car insurance without lapses. Stay on top of the process.
