Understanding License Suspension in Indiana
A Practical Guide to Getting Reinstated and Back on the Road
Your Indiana Driver’s License is suspended. Don’t panic. If Indiana suspends your driver’s license, you have options to get back in their good graces. Get back to driving legally by following the steps in this easy-to-understand guide. It’ll help you through the process with step-by-step instructions.
Perhaps, you’ve run into a bit of a rough patch in your Indiana driving record. Don’t beat yourself up, but focus on getting your driving privilege straightened out. Sometimes, you don’t even have to get attorneys involved. Taken generally, these steps often apply to other states as well. So, what should you do to get your Indiana driving privileges reinstated? Read on.
Step 1: Identify the Cause of Suspension
First of all, find out why Indiana suspended your license. Common reasons include unpaid tickets, too many driving points, or a DUI. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) sends out a notice with the reason and duration of the suspension. As a side note, open your mail and read it (you’d be surprised how many people don’t). For even more details, check your status on the BMV portal or contact their customer service.
Step 2: Address the Underlying Issues
Second, now that you know why the suspension happened, resolve the cause of suspension where possible. For instance, BMV may require that you pay fines or overdue tickets, complete a defensive driving course or fulfill court requirements. For a DUI, BMV often requires a substance abuse program and ignition interlock device. Keep good records.

Step 3: Gather Required Documentation
Now it’s time to make sure to gather and retain the documents proving you’ve met BMV’s reinstatement requirements. Round up any payment receipts, completion certificates, and court records. Go the extra step and confirm your eligibility (making sure you’ve met all of their conditions). Suspensions are for a specific amount of time and BMV informs the end date in their notification. You cannot be reinstated prior to the date they set.
Another piece of documentation BMV usually requires is an SR22 (SR-22) attached to a car insurance policy. What is it? An easy filing prepared by your auto insurance company and submitted by your agent that shows “Financial Responsibility.” It’s not special insurance; rather, it’s a document stating you have car insurance meeting state requirements or better. If a person does not own a vehicle, a Non-owner policy is available.

Step 4: Submit Documentation and Pay Reinstatement Fee
After completing the first three steps, submit your paperwork to the BMV, following their instructions. BMV has final authority over your driver status. Now is a good time to pay the reinstatement fee. The amount depends on your suspension reason. Pay online, by mail, or at the BMV. Check the balance due on your myBMV account.
