Safe driving is always important! Regardless of what state you live in, we can never know how a wrong decision could impact our lives and the lives of our dear ones. Take these headlines for instance (references below):

  • From West Jefferson, Ohio: (WTVM-ABC9, Staff, 6-7-25) Woman, toddler dead after SUV submerges in retention pond during crash, but three cheers to the police and trooper who saved the others!
  • From Des Moines, Iowa: (KCCI, 6-6-25) Des Moines police investigating deadly crash connected to abandoned vehicle
  • From Oklahoma City, Oklahoma-(KOCO, J Greco, 6-9-25) Investigation underway after pedestrian hit, killed by vehicle on I-35 in southeast OKC

Did any of the people involved plan on not going home that evening? It’s unlikely. Think of the heartache that could have possibly been avoided. Accordingly, we must watch the actions of drivers around us as well as our own. This means knowing what’s going on ahead of us, behind us and around us as we drive. Whether the roads are winding country roads or Interstate highways and regardless of what we’re driving, it’s our responsibility to be as actively engaged as we drive. It may mean not swerving to avoid running over an animal in the road instead of swerving into a guardrail or another driver. Hard to do but easier decision to make if know what’s around you.

TIPS FOR SERIOUS DRIVING

Briefly, what are some tips for taking your driving just a bit more seriously (some you already know but are good reminders)?

  1. Actively scan the road and use your mirrors (know your driving environment).
  2. Eat before you drive, not while driving.
  3. Driving isn’t the time for multi-tasking (even though you think you’re good at it).
  4. STOW IT…put your phone out of reach or turn on “do not disturb.”
  5. Seriously, don’t drink, take meds, or do any form of drugs and drive.
  6. Don’t let your passengers distract you (they are precious and your responsibility).
  7. Store the things that can fall off, roll around, or slide so they don’t cause a distraction.
  8. Keep your car insurance up to date for peace of mind.

So, remember, driving requires skills. Lazy habits can cause disastrous results. Teach safe driving skills to your new drivers and be a good example for them. Our actions do speak louder than words to our children, friends and family.
