Another text scam claims you owe ODOT or DMV money – don’t fall for it
BY SOLO INSURANCE®
Oregon DMV says there are spam or phishing text messages circulating. They advise, do not open them: “Another year, another set of phishing scams is making the rounds from senders claiming to be ODOT and DMV. Don’t take the bait!” Oregon Department of Transportation sent this bulletin: READ FULL BULLETIN
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SPAMMY TEXTS
The bulletin gives these helpful directions:
How to protect yourself
- Do not click on links or respond to unsolicited messages claiming to be from ODOT or DMV.
- Be cautious of any text message that demands immediate action or asks for personal information or payment.
- Do not provide personal, financial or vehicle information through unknown websites.
- Ignore and delete the text message and block the number to prevent further potential harm.
- Report scams and suspicious communications to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Include the sender’s phone number and any links included in the text.
GENERAL TIPS TO HANDLE SPAM
Though not directly car insurance related, Solo Insurance® is about good information. Here are some quick reminders about SPAM messages (much applies to emails too).
To handle spam texts:
- Do not engage. Never reply (not even “STOP”), call, or click links in suspicious texts, as this verifies your number is active. Instead, block the contact/sender and immediately delete.
- Report to carrier. Report messages to help carriers identify and block malicious senders by forwarding to 7726 (SPAM).
- You may also report messages to the authorities by filing complaints with the FTC or FCC for phishing attempts.
- Block and Delete. Use your messaging app’s built-in “Block” feature, then delete the message to prevent future contact from that number.
- Filter for Spam. Enable built-in spam filtering in your messaging app to reduce future messages and keep personal information private.
Protect yourself and your number. Be cautious about providing your mobile number online. Often information is sold and sometimes to spammers. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it likely is.
