Insurance Fraud, an Ongoing Expense for Each of Us

Car Insurance FraudWe quite often get asked, “why are my car insurance rates going up when I haven’t had any tickets or accidents?”  It seems to be an ongoing trend over the last couple years across the U.S.  But there could be some good news, according to the Associated Press: BATON ROUGE, La. (AP, 9-19-18) — Louisiana's insurance commissioner, Jim Donelon, says the state's auto insurance market may be stabilizing, with a smaller rise in premiums expected this year compared with prior years.  While not the direction we all want it to go, it’s possible the pendulum is near the time where it can start swinging back.

One of the biggest reasons is so many people are driving without insurance.  Another reason that your car insurance rates go up is to account for the insurance fraud and expenses associated with it.  Fraud can range from giving false addresses, not listing drivers to saying an accident happened after a policy started when it didn’t.

A California man was recently convicted of fraud after an accident according to the California News Wire Services, News Partner | 9-19-18:

“Man Buys Car Insurance 1 Hour After Crash, Convicted of Fraud…The Solano Co. motorist, who got 11-year sentence, even pleaded with the other driver to falsify time of accident, prosecutors said”

The Coalition for Insurance Fraud (insurancefraud.org) estimates nearly one-third of insurers (32 percent) say fraud was as high as 20 percent of auto insurance claims costs.  Detecting fraud before claims are paid, and upgrading analytics, were mentioned most often as the insurers’ main fraud-fighting priorities.

Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime.  It costs each insurance buyer more (in all types of insurance from auto to home and life to health).  So, think someone else’s fraud doesn’t affect you?  Think again.
