Top 10 Stolen Car Cities, Cars & Safety Tips

Top Stolen Car Cities

Top Stolen Car Cities

Stolen cars cause great hardship, even more so for those with just liability insurance. Each year the National Insurance Crime Bureau [NICB] ranks the top 10 cities for auto thefts,

their Hot Spots report, and top 10 vehicles stolen, their Hot Wheels report. (Sources: www.nicb.org/news/).

For 2017, the 10 areas with the highest vehicle theft rates, per capita, were:

2017 Ranking                                   2016 Ranking

    1. Albuquerque, NM                  1

    2. Anchorage, AK                        6

    3. Pueblo, CO                               2

    4. Redding, CA                             20

    5. St. Joseph, MO                        28

    6. Bakersfield, CA                       3

    7. Modesto, CA                           4

    8. Stockton-Lodi, CA                   12

    9. Yuba City, CA                           30

    10. Springfield, MO                     33

These aren’t the most thefts but the most thefts per capita.  Perhaps because in bigger cities, like Dallas, Richmond, Indianapolis and Portland people are used to locking their vehicles and taking precautions.  But not always! The top three cities/surrounding areas for actual thefts in 2017 are: 1) LA/Long Beach/Anaheim, 2) San Francisco/Oakland/Hayward and 3) Chicago/Naperville/Elgin.  The NICB notes that areas with smaller populations and a moderate number of thefts often have a higher theft rate than areas with more vehicle thefts since they have larger populations to absorb them. That is how St. Joseph, with 952 thefts, places 5th while Los Angeles, with 60,444 thefts, places 33rd.

But what are the most commonly stolen vehicles?

A point worth considering if buying a used car, perhaps.  For 2016, the most stolen vehicles in the nation were:

1.      Honda Accord (model year most stolen 1997)

2.      Honda Civic (model year most stolen 1998)

3.      Ford Pickups-full size (model year most stolen 2006)

4.      Chevrolet Pickups-full size (model year most stolen 2004)

5.      Toyota Camry (model year most stolen 2016)

6.      Nissan Altima (model year most stolen 2015)

7.      Dodge Pickup-full size (model year most stolen 2015)

8.      Toyota Corolla (model year most stolen 2015)

9.      Chevrolet Impala (model year most stolen 2008)

10.   Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee (model year most stolen 2000)

Things to Help Avoid Getting Your Car Stolen:

  • Always know where your keys are, especially when out.
  • Lock and secure your vehicle when leaving it, even to pay for gas.
  • Use a physical anti-theft device.
  • Keep your windows closed
  • Park in well lighted and populated areas.
  • Valuables don't belong in your vehicle, ever.
  • Never leave your car running unattended, or even while waiting. Take keys out of the ignition.
  • Never leave a spare key in the car.
  • Use tech-based auto recovery tools.
