Importance of Insurance Policy Dates

Importance of Dates and Times on an Insurance Policy

We’re not talking about dinner and a movie but a tricky thing to note about the dates on a calendar and your car insurance. This could save you money, time and/or hassle, plus avoid potential future lapses.

People see a date on their insurance paperwork and think it’s the date that matters but it’s also the time listed with the date that matters.  As a rule of thumb, it’s always beneficial in car insurance to think one day ahead of any date you see.  The reason is, car insurance companies often use a time stamp of 12:01 a.m. and one minute of insurance after midnight doesn’t do anyone much good.  The most important paperwork on which to pay attention to this rule of thumb are Renewals, Information Requests and Cancellations.  For instance:

Ø  If your Renewal date is February 1.  Your last day of insurance is January 31.  Your policy expires at 12:01 a.m. on February 1, one minute after midnight.

Ø  If your Cancellation date is June 1.  Your last day of insurance is May 31.  Your policy cancels at 12:01 a.m. on June 1, one minute after midnight.

Ø  If a company requests information by a certain date, it’s best to get it to them before the date so they can get it processed by the due date (an possibly avoid cancellation).

Therefore, it’s a great idea to think one day ahead of the dates you see on your car insurance paperwork to avoid potential lapses, cancellations and headaches.  People see a date and not the 12:01 a.m. (or think it means by Noon).  Payment due dates are fine on the actual date except at Renewal time (see above).  If you make your renewal payment on your renewal date you’ve already lapsed since 12:01 a.m. and are driving without insurance on your renewal date.

The easiest way to avoid complications, if possible, is to think a day ahead on car insurance dates and you don’t have to worry about it.
